Brief Introduction

Varistor is nonlinear resistor mainly composed of zinc oxide as the main material of metal oxide semiconductor components,and they can be divided into symmetric (non-polarity) and asymmetric (with polarity) according to the voltage-ampere characteristic.The nonlinear resistors are more sensitive to voltage, when voltage reached one set value, resistance conducts rapidly. Due to characteristics of high effective nonlinear coefficient,large through-flow capacity,fast action and no continued flow, they are mainly used for the absorption of various operating surge & lightning wave voltage and lightning protection of electronic equipments, which can prevent such voltage interfering with the normal operation or damaging the various circuit elements.

Working principle

When MOV varistor in a rest state, relative to the protected electronic components, has a very high impedance (number megohm) without changing circuit characteristics of the original design.When achieve the momentary surge voltage (more than breakdown voltage of the varistor), the varistor impedance will be low (only a few ohms.) and caused the original short circuit.In other words, electronic products or components are thus protected.
